| Rice production in the
state of South Carolina was established economically by slave labor that provided a
controlled flow of water through flood gates called “trunks” that were built
and installed in dikes surrounding large tracts of land where the crops
were grown.
The rice fields also became an attraction for
migratory birds: duck, geese, and even swans. Hunting these birds
has been a favorite sport since early South Carolina.
Today
large plantations in South Carolina still maintain their ownership of
the marshlands by maintaining the dikes surrounding large tracts of
land. Hunting migratory birds is still a favorite sport. |
